FAQ

Q: What does "Historical Ballroom Dance" mean?

What does Historical Ballroom Dance Mean?

A: Historical Ballroom Dance Club has produced/co-sponsored 175+ Free Admission Saturday Night Theme Dances on the UCLA campus, since HBDC club founding,
during the 1997-1998 school year by James & Cynthia.

Historical Ballroom Dance generally means dances prior to the 1930s.

HBDC aims to produce events that introduce UCLA students, faculty, alumni, and community members to social partner dances and performing arts of the past, as well as the social and historical contexts of these dances. Many of the styles of dance we teach and practice in HBDC are rarely learned today, and our theme dances aim to recreate unique social dancing cultures of the past.

HBDC Celebrates 500 Years of Ballroom Dance by
presenting 13 Saturday Night Theme Dances each year.

An opportunity to learn Dances from the 15th Century to the 1950s.

Learn dances from the Renaissance, Baroque, American Revolution, English Regency, Early California, Civil War, Ragtime Era, WWI, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s

Q: Is there a dress code/Do I have to wear a costume?

A: No you don't! We don't have a set dress code for any event, though we recommend you stay away from stiletto heels, which are not much fun to dance in and can scratch the wood floors.

Costumes and formal wear are greatly admired, but they are not necessary.

Anchor 5

Q: Do I have to bring a partner?

A: You can if you like, but it is certainly not necessary. There are plenty of partners to go around at each event, and we highly recommend changing partners throughout the night! There are always plenty of new people to meet.

Anchor 6

Q: Do I have to RSVP?

A: Please RSVP to HistoricalDance@yahoo.com
RSVP to wix is not considered a reservation. Only RSVP to yahoo.

Current Annual Members have 1st priority followed by non-members that have made a reservation. You will want to have a RSVP for our club's more popular dances (the rooms can only hold so many people!) and makes it a whole lot easier to order enough water/food/chairs if we have an idea of how many people will be attending.

Q: How do I get to your events? Where do I park?

Anchor 7

A: Our events are usually in either Kerckhoff Grand Salon or Ackerman Grand Ballroom-Room 2400. (Although we have held events at UCLA Powell Library 2nd Floor Rotunda, UCLA Ackerman BRR (Bruin Reception Room-2414), Bruin Plaza, UCLA Pauley Pavillion, and off campus at Westside JCC Auditorium
and at UCLA URC.

Off Campus Lessons/Events are not sponsored by student groups.

There is Free Parking on Hilgard Ave. (East Border Street of UCLA)

UCLA Parking Lot P2 at Hilgard/Westholme (East side of campus) is the most affordable on-campus parking lot, usually $8 per night. Other on-campus parking lots are usually $12
Campus parking fees vary. P2 is usually $2 per hour.

See map below. Ackerman Union and Kerckhoff Grand Salon circled in red, Parking Structure 4 in yellow.

Driving directions: once you get to campus, get on Charles E. Young Drive North and head for Parking Structure 4. Once there find the Pay by Space station to pay for parking.

Walking directions: Kerckhoff Hall and Ackerman Union are next to each other. If you can find Bruin Plaza (the square with the big metal bear in it), Ackerman Union is the big building up the cobblestoned hill from the bear. Ackerman Grand Ballroom is on the second floor of Ackerman Union (actually 4th floor of building).
If you continue walking up the hill past Ackerman Union, you will reach Kerckhoff Hall. Kerckhoff Grand Salon is accessible from the outdoor patio next to Kerckhoff Coffee House, on the second floor level of Kerckhoff Hall.

Q: Wow! This is really cool!

How can I help you make these events happen?

Anchor 8

A: Wow! We're excited that you're excited! There are all sorts of ways to make yourself useful and share your talents at HBDC. We are always looking for artists, musicians, teachers, dancers, money people, publicity people, cheerful people, people with clubs who'd like to collaborate... the list goes on and on! And don't worry if you don't fit into any of those categories. We'd love to have any kind of help you can give!

Please email HistoricalDance@yahoo.com
if you're interested in getting involved with HBDC!
